Hello FRES Families,
Welcome back from Winter Break and Happy New Year! We hope you had a chance to relax, recharge, and come back ready to start 2023. As you can see from the list of dates above, the new year is starting with exciting happenings coming up in January and February. In addition, please make note of the school closures in bold on the list.

Help for FRES Families in Need
We are starting a community support group at school, called Feathers for Families! Here are ways you can help ALL YEAR ‘ROUND:
BSAP Saturday Math Academy Spring Session--Register Now
The HCPSS Black Student Achievement Program Saturday Math Academy Spring Session is approaching! This year, the BSAP Saturday Math Academy will offer an in-person enrichment program for Howard County Public School System students in all levels of math for grades 3-12 based on course availability. Registration will take place online January 7 from 9:00 a.m. until capacity is reached. Class space is limited. Families can register by accessing the HCPSS Connect Website.
Don't Forget to Dress for the Weather
The temperatures are getting colder. Please be sure your child is dressed warm enough for outdoor recess every day. This includes coats, gloves, and hats. Consider labeling your child's belongings as we already have many items in lost and found. Please note that students will be outside for recess when the temperature combined with the wind chill is not less than 20 degrees Fahrenheit. You can read more about weather guidelines/recess in the HCPSS Student Handbook under Student Health and Well-Being.
PTA Meeting – January 10th
Join us for the monthly PTA meeting in the cafeteria at 7pm. We have so many fun events planned for 2023 and can’t wait to share all the fun things to come.
5th Grade Fundraisers
You can support our 5th graders and help them have a great year by participating in these two fundraisers: Buy a Papa John's card for $15 and get unlimited buy 1 get 1 free pizzas for a year! Card expires 12/31/2023 and is good at over 150 locations in the DMV. Please email VP2@frespta.org if you would like to purchase one by 1/10/23.
Thursday, January 12 - Tampico Grill fundraiser will take place all day (11:00am - 9:30 pm) so grab lunch and/or dinner! The restaurant is located at 42 Washington Blvd. (Route 1) in downtown Laurel. Take out orders may be placed through the restaurant's website (https://www.tampicogrill.com) or customers may dine in. Remember to mention "Forest Ridge" when they pick up their food (for online orders) or when they pay for their food (for dine-in customers).
Crazy Mason Milkshake Restaurant Night – January 25th
Come out to Crazy Mason Milkshake Bar in Old Ellicott City from 4pm – 7pm for this month’s restaurant night. Click here to see their menu.
As a bonus the mason jars will have our FRES logo on them and they also package them up to go, so you can enjoy the goodness at home. Please visit the event facebook page for more information.
Health and Wellness Fair - Friday, January 27 from 6:30-8:00pm
Stressed? Tired? Don't want to cook, can't find matching socks, and wondering how to fit in a workout? Life is hectic with young kids and our bodies, minds, and families are impacted in so many different ways! FRES PTA wants to support our amazing families and community at our Health and Wellness Fair on Friday, January 27. Bring your whole family, help yourself to some food, and then send the kids off to the Media Center for a movie and babysitting.
Then head back to the cafeteria! We will have representatives from the following organizations and businesses to share with us the many ways we can support each other and places we can reach out to for help as well:
Are you a health professional working in one of the following fields and excited to help FRES PTA put on our first in-person event of the year? We are looking for organizations and professionals who are available to speak on the following topics or represent these organizations:
Please email Pratima Lele at firstname.lastname@example.org if you can help us with some of our topics!
Culture Fest - February 24th
Did you know that 28 different languages are spoken by our amazing families at FRES? Just imagine learning so much more about our wonderfully diverse community and experiencing the food, music, and more from so many countries! Would YOU and your student like to share your community with our FRES family? If so, please email Khaleda Hasan at email@example.com to join our committee or to share your ideas!
The FRES Students and staff have enjoyed all the WatchDOGs that have volunteered thus far. Thank you for being such supportive members of FRES. In 2023 we have many days still available. If you would like to sign up, please click here.
If you have any questions or need to purchase a shirt, please reach out to Mrs. Norris at Alyssa_Norris@hcpss.org
