We hope everyone had a wonderful Spring Break!  We are so glad to have our students back in the building.  Just a reminder that the third quarter ends on Wednesday so any incomplete assignments should be completed by then.

Ramadan
Ramadan begins the evening of April 12th this year.  Any students who are fasting and attending school in-person may request to be in an alternative location during their lunch period.

Please email Mrs. Tordella (heather_tordella@hcpss.org) or Mrs. Edmondson (loreal_edmondson@hcpss.org) if you would like for your child to join them in the Media Center during their scheduled lunch time.  Please have your child bring a quiet activity from home to work on (book, coloring pages, etc.)  Thank you!

Enjoy your weekend,

From our GT Teachers
Seminars
will be offered during 4th quarter for grades 2-5. All applications are due by April 16. Are you interested? Check out 4th quarter GT Seminars for more information.

Recently, all 3rd grade students were reviewed for placement in the 4th Grade G/T Math class for 2021-2022 using multiple data points related to student performance, including MAP assessment data and class performance. Families of students who have been placed in G/T Math will be receiving communication from the school by U.S. Mail or email.

If your child was not placed in G/T Math at this time, you may request that the school conduct a placement review with additional information that you provide.
Placement Review Process:
Please send an email to your school's G/T Resource Teacher by April 16, 2021 with details supporting your child's strengths and advanced-level achievement in mathematics. Documentation of advanced-level achievement may include:

  • Highlights of related strengths and interests of the student outside of school in the area of mathematics
  • Demonstration of abstract thinking and problem-solving ability
  • Evaluations from consultants and test data from standardized tests administered outside the school system.

The G/T Placement Review Committee will meet to review your child's performance data and the provided documentation. Results of the review will be communicated by April 30, 2021. Placement recommendations will continue to be re-evaluated throughout elementary school.

From the Health Room
We hope that everyone had a safe and healthy spring break. It is nice to be back in school and seeing the students.

We appreciate the outstanding effort our parents are making to keep our students safe and in school. We cannot thank you enough for keeping your students' home when they are sick, following the advice to get them tested for COVID, and following return-to-school guidelines.

Attached is a flyer to review with your students as they settle back into the school routine.

Our goal is to keep every student and staff member healthy. We can accomplish this if we work together. If your child has any of these symptoms:

1 of the following:
  • New onset cough, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing
  • New loss of taste or smell
OR

2 of the following:
  • Fever over 100.4 or chills within the past 24 hours.
  • Fatigue, Muscle, or body aches.
  • Headache.
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Chills or shaking chills
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
Please keep them home!!  Parents, if you have any questions and/or concerns please call the health room before sending your students to school. We are happy to answer any questions!
On another note, please pack extra clothing for your children. The health room does not have extra clothes to provide for students in case of an unfortunate event.

From the PE Teachers
Important PE Updates:
If your child is returning to the building for hybrid learning, please have them bring a water bottle that can be refilled for PE.

We will be starting a Jump Rope unit.  A jump rope was put on the school supply list at the beginning of the year, but we understand not everyone was able to acquire one.  We have been gifted jump ropes from the county to give out to students that need one, so we will be doing a pick-up on...
  • Wednesday, April 14th from 9-11am in the car loop.
We hope that students can find a space (driveway, garage, backyard) to make this unit a success!

Picture Days - correction
Students who attend on "A" day and our "E" students will have their photographs taken on April 27; students receiving virtual-only instruction will be photographed on April 28 (appointments will be required; a sign-up link will be sent next week); and those students attending on "B" Days will have their pictures taken on April 29.  All orders will be placed online, sent to FRES, and sent home with students.  Parents of students who are learning virtually will need to pick the pictures up from FRES.  View the flyer here.  You can start the pre-order process here.

Media Matters and Tech Tidbits

  • The Howard County Library is holding a virtual Q&A with the author of Season of Styx Malone, Ms.Kekla Magoon on April 14th at 3:30pm. This book is a current selection for Battle of the Books and was the FRES book club selection last year.  To register, visit https://howardcounty.librarycalendar.com/events/virtual-bob-qa-kekla-magoon-author-season-styx-malone

  • Grades 2-3 Book Club: The Media Team is thrilled to announce our virtual FRES BOOK CLUB for students and their grownups in grades 2-3 on May 26th at 6pm via Google Meet. We will be reading “ Ellray Jakes is Not a Chicken” by Sally Warner. Register your student for a free book by visiting  https://forms.gle/AhwdabcDAyrL4DQh7 . * You must be signed into your student’s account for access.* For more information, please email loreal_edmondson@hcpss.org.

  • Is your child’s Chromebook glitchy, sometimes dropping the meet, the mic not working, or taking a long time for connection? Below are two suggestions that you can do to speed it up and prepare it for our final few months of school!

  • Check to see if your child has added extensions (go to the three dots in the  upper right corner, down to More Tools, over to Extensions.)  Extensions may make the cursor leave fairy dust, look like a unicorn or emoji, or have a colorful background.  These should all be removed in order to free up space, eliminate distractions from the screen, and stop interruption of the Google Meet files.  Students have not been instructed to add any extensions to their Chromebooks, and we can not support the technology if there are extensions used that were placed there by students.

  • If your child’s Chromebook is glitchy, please perform a Reset.  This is more than turning the Chromebook off then on again.  The directions for a Reset, which will put it back to factory settings and the initial HCPSS set up, can be found at this link: Chromebook Reset. Weekends are a great time to follow these steps so that the Chromebook is ready for Monday morning instruction.

  • Please remind your child that Chromebooks are for instructional purposes only.  They should be used between 9:30 am - 4 pm only, then put away until the next school day.

Thank you for your support and assistance!
