Three members of the FRES fifth-grade Green Team and a Green School Committee member presented their concerns about single-use plastics in Howard County. Grace Edmondson, Katie Lindenmann, and Wilo Dixit attended the Calvin Ball listening session on Wednesday evening at Wilde Lake High School and presented their experiences, hopes, and dreams for the county when it comes to plastic bags. They received compliments from Dr. Ball and warm applause! Thank you to Mrs. Major for also presenting at this event! Thank you to Mrs. Clawson for prepping the students for this important presentation.
On October 17 students helped collect straws during all lunch shifts to get a baseline for a daily straw count--308 straws were collected!! That translates into 55,440 straws per school year!
In preparation for the Straw-Free Friday kick-off on November 16, videos that show the problems with plastic and solutions to reducing plastic pollution were shown on Wednesday, November 14, in the cafeteria during lunch. The following videos were shown:
How Much Plastic Is in the Ocean - PBS Digital Studios https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFZS3Vh4lfI for grades 3-5
Kids React to Plastic Pollution - The Eco Experts https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiGR9HzRrgk for grades K-2
