Forest Ridge News and Events

From Dr. Varlack

Dear FRES Community,

We live in a world surrounded by technology. And we know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly depend on understanding how technology works.  Unfortunately, only a tiny fraction of us are learning how technology works. Fewer than half of all schools teach computer science.

That’s why our entire school is joining in on the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code, during Computer Science Education Week (December 5-11). More than 100 million students worldwide have already tried an Hour of Code.

Our Hour of Code is making a statement that Forest Ridge is ready to teach these foundational 21st century skills.  Next week each homeroom will host an hour of computer science instruction in addition to the activities provided during weekly technology classes.  I encourage you to ask your children about these activities, and continue discussion at home about this important topic.  This is a chance to change the future of education in Howard County.

See http://hourofcode.com/us for details, and help spread the word.

Sincerely,

Genee A. Varlack
Principal

PTA News...

From the PTA President
It must be December because the temperatures are getting colder and there are holiday decorations everywhere! No matter which of the winter holidays you celebrate, I am sure you we can agree that we are all gearing up for some busy weeks ahead. Hopefully we'll all get some time to just sit, relax and enjoy the time with our kiddos.

If you are looking for a way to get some exercise and hang out with the family, join us tonight for skate night. Roll over to Laurel Skate Center from 7 p.m. – 10 p.m. for just $9. Say you're with FRES to get the discount.
